I’m a grinder, not a grifter, eighteen years I’ve been a drifter
And these hands have fixed more trouble than they’ve caused
Do my job whatever that might be, giving most but not all of me
Some things you don’t get back once they’ve been lost
Never sat upon my daddy’s knee, had to take what wasn’t given to me
The only thing left that’s mine is my name
Where’m I going, where’ve I been, everywhere and back again
The faces change but the places all the same

My stories are all written on my skin
Tattoos and scars revealing where I’ve been
I believe my day will come I just hope it’s not my last
I’ll find my way Someday

Toss and turn most every night, even sleep becomes a fight
Grind my teeth until they turn to dust
And when the morning reappeared, a little more white in my beard
I don’t do what I want, but what I must
Not one for talking very much, and I forgot about a woman’s touch
Sometimes lonesome’s all I know how to be
Recall the way she spoke in a whisper, trying to forget how bad I miss her
Knowing she won’t find a better man than me

I just go where the work is and I don’t care
About things that don't matter worth a damn
We’re all the same, but we’re not the same
And I might be more than I believe I am
