Eden
04:39
|
|||
One road in, the same road out
And a lot of things the people here have learned to live without
The sign says Eden, hard to believe
And the irony in that name isn’t lost on me
An old phone booth on the corner, nothing left but broken glass
I just need to find a place to get some caffeine and some gas
Windmills on the mountain bringing power down below
But I can’t see what else is here under seven feet of snow
Streets of empty buildings, cleverly disguised
I wonder is this their idea of paradise
Here in Eden
Cassie works the general store she was born here in ’95
And she tells me she’ll be damned if this where she’s gonna die
Her whole life story comes in casual conversation
Eleven hundred people in this town and she knows every one
Nothing here to hold on to that’s easy for her to say
She’s seen California in a photograph but it’s a million miles away
Living all her life here has put her to the test
‘Cause when everybody knows your name they just assume the rest
Streets of empty buildings, a face with empty eyes
It’s clear that this ain’t her idea of paradise
Here in Eden
Back out on the two lane road just as quickly as I came
If I’d have blinked I might’ve missed this town and never caught the name
Cassie stands and waits, moves her hair off of her face
I’ve got some place to be and maybe she’ll get to hers someday
Streets of empty buildings seen through a strangers eyes
This damn sure ain’t a postcard from paradise
Here in Eden

Fade Away
05:23
|
|||
Looking back over my shoulder
All I see is that I’m getting older
You know it feels a little strange (sometimes)
To know that’s something that I can’t change
Close my eyes and I’m there again
Things seem exactly like they were back then
See your hands reaching out for me
Exactly how it was supposed to be
See a lifetime fade away
Watch it all just fade away
Holding on with both hands still it slips right through
Nothing I can do... about it now
You were always a ray of light
Filling up a lot of empty nights
Spending all my time hanging off of a telephone line
Never could’ve see you had someone else in mind
You walked away with no reason and no rhyme
Guess I wasn’t what you needed at the time
Third time’s a charm but not for me, wasn’t meant to be now
Whatever was wrong, I couldn’t see it
See your light just fade away....
Sometimes I wonder what you’re doing now
I know I’ve got better things to think about
Times are different and we are too, I’m sure
I remember how good it felt to finally forget you
I’m not the boy that I was back then
‘Cause where we are comes from where we’ve been
I gave the best of me, and you got the best of me
But now it’s nothing but a memory
See a good love fade away....
See the memory fade away
Watch it all just fade away
Held on with both hands now I let it slip right through
It’s all that I can do... about it now

Wasting Time
04:56
|
|||
Tire tracks on my front lawn
A dead giveaway she’s been and gone
Didn’t even look to see if I was home
Had some questions about her mental health
And needed to be by herself
But wasn’t sure if she wanted to be alone
Only call me by my name when she’s upset
Or else it’s ‘baby’ though she knows I hate that
One more thing she wished had not been said
Guess we won’t be getting sleep tonight
Maybe we’ll do that when we die
Lay with the monsters underneath the bed
Saturday morning came and went without her
For the first time in quite a while
Better late than never can’t go on forever
While we’re spending all our days wasting time
A picture frame crashed against the wall
As the shards of glass began to fall
Our photograph lay torn on the bedroom floor
That shattered mirror over the sink
Says it’s wrong to act before you think
The evidence even she can not ignore
Said she can’t get out of her own skin
Feels as tired and empty as she’s ever been
With no conscience of the toll it takes on me
I hear her crying in the shower from the other room
I go outside and howl at the moon
The only place to find some room to breathe
Sunday morning came and went without her
For the first time in quite a while
Better late than never can’t go on forever
While she’s spending all her days wasting time
Last night I stayed awake thinking about her
For the last time for quite a while
Better late than never can’t go on forever
While I’m spending all my days wasting time
While I’m spending all my days wasting time

Angry All The Time
05:43
|
|||
There’s a slate grey sky and a biting wind
I’m learning how to be my own best friend
Skeleton trees and ground like concrete
As I try to get my body back over my feet
The descent was easy, it happened like that
But it took a lot of things that I can’t get back
It’ll cut you up, it’ll cut you down
Drag you under until you drown
I’m tired of being angry all the time
Tired of being angry all the time
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again
I can’t forgive what I can’t forget
I won’t pay for someone else’s crime
And I’m tired of being angry all the time
Running through my memories looking for more
Each time there’s one less than there was before
The ones that are gone I miss the most
But I guess I can’t share my life with a ghost
I’m looking for the words to go with the voice
An idle mind is the devil’s toy
It’ll cut you up it’ll cut you down
Drag you under until you drown

Julia Rose
05:43
|
|||
I watch your little hands grasp the air
What is it that you see?
I watch you sleep at night, a tired angel
You rest so peacefully
I watch you smile sometimes as you dream
I hope of joyful things
And when the new day comes, I will be here
To share what it might bring
The most perfect thing I’ve ever known
My Julia Rose
I watch you grow a little everyday
I live to see you smile
I watch you reach for me, so I can hold you
If only for a while
You see the joy in simple things
You lead your own parade
Like the innocence (I see) in your face
I hope it never fades
The most perfect thing I’ll ever know
My Julia Rose
Don’t cry, little one
Your time has just begun
So much to see and to be done
But you’ll have to wait for tomorrow’s sun
There’s beauty in that angel’s smile
And a wonder in your eyes
You had me when you took that little hand
And put it inside mine
I hope that you will always be
Just who you want to be
Because I know that through your eyes
You see the/only good in me
The most perfect thing I’ll ever know
My Julia Rose
Wish I could see the world through your eyes
I hope you always aim for the stars in the sky
You have the chance to make your own light
And let it shine…
Shine shine shine…

Clinchfield Rail
05:10
|
|||
The soot so thick and black I could cut it with my knife
And it’s been four months, or maybe more, since I’ve seen my pretty wife
I pray I’m home before too long, though that’s prob’ly just a dream,
To meet my newborn baby boy who’s waiting there for me
Every day is longer than the one that came before
Carving earth and moving rock ‘til my body can take no more
Two hundred miles left ahead to reach that Carolina line
Got to get that coal to Spartanburg from the old Virginia mine
Good Lord willing and the creek don’t rise
I’ll make it to see my next sunrise
And I’ll be home by Christmas time
If the Clinchfield Rail gets through
The Appalachian sky so blue, the sun it burns so bright
We sit around the campfire singing lonely songs at night
But each night there’s one more missing who didn’t last the day
Falling to their deaths someone else keeping their pay
They’re buried in silent graves beneath eighty feet of fill
They gave their lives to make a living and now they never will
Still a hundred miles left ahead to reach that Carolina line
Got to get that coal to Spartanburg from the old Virginia mine
For these tunnels and these bridges I’ve sacrificed my life
And it’s been four years, or maybe more, since I’ve seen my pretty wife
The boom towns start to look the same as we drive on through these hills
Through the back country land with black diamonds and smoke from moonshine stills
The Blue Ridge Mountains stand before me, the promise that they hold
To connect this Appalachian land to the rest of the world
Only fifty miles left ahead to reach that Carolina line
Got to get that coal to Spartanburg from the old Virginia mine

Make A Wrong Thing Right
04:44
|
|||
I’ve done all I can do, and said all I can say
And all that’s left is for me to hope it even matters anyway
I’ve opened up the door, if you're so inclined
The next move belongs to you and I’m waiting for your sign
All I can do is all I can do
And every word that I’ve said to you is true
It's a lovely imperfection and before we say goodnight
I’m doing all I can to make a wrong thing right
Tell me what’s on your mind, tell me what you see
Don’t be afraid, I promise you your thoughts are safe with me
Come in closer, you don’t need to pull away
I don’t take this casually, you know that’s not my way
You don’t like to give me answers, not a reason or a rhyme
I’ll settle for your maybe, and maybe there will come a time
I won't make empty promises or sell you empty lines
I can only hope that out of sight does not mean out of mind

Tell Me Something
04:53
|
|||
A penny for my thoughts you say, you can keep the change
If they're truth or if they're fiction they're worth about the same
If it's a lie you're after I'll go put on the mask
But if it's the truth you're looking for I hope you don't regret you asked
But ok, fine, really it’s alright
I’ll keep taking punches until your arms get tired
But alright, fine, really it’s ok
You just sit there staring ‘til you figure out what to say
So tell me something
Give me words for once that mean a little more than nothing
I think I know it’s been long enough now
It's a habit not an act
So tell me something that you can't take back
Words come to me when it comes to you I hope I choose them right
If you’d use yours and talk to me then we wouldn’t have to fight
But words on paper ain't the same as putting hand in hand
But the written are the only ones you seem to understand
But ok, fine, really it’s alright
Just sit there in silence and we’ll waste another night
But alright, fine, really it’s ok
Your face keeps getting longer and it’s older from the strain
So dig your heels a little deeper, you can’t see that something’s missing
Like a line coming off of the page, it’s better lived than written

No Matter Where You Go
04:52
|
|||
I look at you and I see myself
Staring right back at me
I never cared about much at all
‘Til the day you came to be
Now I watch you getting older right before my eyes
A little more every day
I want to teach you things I had to learn on my own
There’s so much I need to say… to you
I will lead the way for you
As you start down this road
Then you will walk beside me
As you begin to grow
And when the time is right
For you to make that road your own
I’ll be right behind you
No matter where you go
Be sure to always say exactly what you mean
And mean every word you say
Be bold enough to stand your ground, turn and face that crowd
When they’re heading the wrong way
I know it can be hard sometimes to be who you want to be
But in doing so you’ll find
The people who mind they don’t matter at all
And those who matter they don’t mind
You won’t ever have to wonder, you will always know
How much I love you
You won’t ever have to wonder, you will always know
How proud I am
Don’t be afraid to learn from the missteps that you make
Believe in you and don’t give up
I’ll do everything I can to make you confident and brave
And hope that it’s enough
It’s all because of you I’ve become a better man
And learned what life really means
Until the day I’m gone I’ll try to repay
All that you’ve given to me
I look at you and I see myself
Staring right back at me....

Back Again
04:56
|
|||
Let’s take a ride, just you and I
Somewhere we’ve never been
Let’s get up and rise, loosen the ties
And all that we’ve been holding in
Right now I’m gone
But I’ll be back again
Right now I’m gone
But I’ll be back again
I’ll be back again before too long
We can sit a while and I’ll sing some songs
‘Bout where we’re going not where we’ve been
We can do it all when I’m back again
Let’s take a ride, just you and I
Somewhere we can have some peace
Let’s get up and go, the peace will come slow
So much that we’ll never leave
Right now I’m gone
But I’ll be back again
Right now I’m gone
But I’ll be back again
I’ll be back again before too long
We can sit a while and I’ll sing some songs
‘Bout where we’re going not where we’ve been
We can do it all when I’m back again
Let’s stay for a while, just you and I
Somewhere we can call our own
Let’s sit by the shore, no needs anymore
Give in to the great unknown
Right now I’m gone
But I’ll be back again
Right now I’m gone
But I’ll be back again
I’ll be back again before too long
We can sit a while and I’ll sing some songs
‘Bout where we’re going not where we’ve been
We can do it all when I’m back again
